Ohio - Buckeye State

Ohio is a state in the northeastern United States. The northern border of Ohio borders Canada, the southern border is defined by the Ohio River. The capital city of Ohio is Columbus, other well-known cities are Cleveland and Toledo. Ohio is one of the states in the Midwest of the USA. Ohio gets the nickname Buckeye State from the many Ohio horse chestnut trees (Buckeye trees) that grow here.

From the Indian region to the mother of the presidents

The first Europeans to control this area were the French. They expanded an extensive trade network between settlers and the indigenous people of the region. After the war with the British, France had to surrender the area to England.

After the independence of the United States, Ohio was a much larger area that included several other states.

Today's Ohio area was the first to officially ban slavery. In the mid-19th century, the area waged war with the State of Michigan over the city of Toledo. The war is still known today as the Toledo War.

Because so many former US presidents come from Ohio, the state is nicknamed the Mother of Presidents.

Small rivers, beautiful lakes and long hiking trails - a surprise every season

Ohio is a flat area with rivers and lakes. In the north, Ohio borders Lake Eire. The Ohio River, which defines the south of the state, shapes a large area. Small and large rivers run through the south.

The many rivers form an idyllic landscape, which is recognized by some national and state parks.

The Cuyahoga Valley National Park has only existed since 2000. A small river meanders through the region and gives the park its name. The park is particularly popular with hikers and cyclists, many long hiking trails are designated for visitors and offer a beautiful panorama through all seasons.

Nestled in the heart of the Great Lakes region, Ohio is the place to experience the real United States. Surrounded by parks and located on the shore of Lake Erie, Cleveland has Midwest features combined with cosmopolitan attractions, worthy of a big city.

Museums are one of the city's strong points and offer a very complete itinerary for all visitors. One of the most visited is the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame [Rock and Roll Gallery of Fame]. There, artifacts that honor the entire history of the genre, from ABBA to Frank Zappa, are exhibited.

Places visitors shouldn't miss in Ohio

Cuyahoga Valley National Park

This park is the only national park in the state. It is not, like other nationally known national parks in the United States, characterized by spectacular mountains and lonely expanses, but by rivers, waterfalls and 200 kilometers of hiking and biking trails. If you want to explore the park in a particularly convenient way, take a ride on the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad.

Cincinnati, Cleveland, Columbus

These three large cities are particularly impressive due to their high cultural density. Museums, theaters, art galleries, symphony orchestras and food festivals make these cities attractive excursion destinations. Numerous bars, restaurants, shopping opportunities and lively districts ensure variety, relaxation and education during your vacation.

Lake Erie Islands

Visitors will find one of the most beautiful areas of Ohio around the large Lake Erie on the Canadian border. There is more than a dozen small, idyllic islands here that are ideal for camping, fishing and boat trips. The maritime area is surrounded by forests.

Amish Country

Ohio is home to the Amish Christian community, which focuses on the Northeast. This religious community goes back to the beginning of the 19th century. Anyone visiting Amish Country feels like they are traveling back in time, because time seems to stand still in this rural idyll with historic residential and school buildings. The Amish religious community is characterized by its puritan lifestyle, which dispenses with the pleasant achievements of the modern world and actually lives as it did 200 years ago.

Hocking Hills

Hocking Hills consists of a dramatic rocky landscape and an extensive cave system. The beautiful landscape crossed by the Hocking River offers many opportunities for outdoor sports such as rafting, fishing, hiking and climbing. Speleological exploration and a view of the sky at John Glenn Astronomy Park are fun for the whole family.

Rock & Roll Hall of Fame

Rock music fans should definitely visit the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland. It's all about the big names in the scene here. A large hall stages the stars accordingly. There are also numerous exhibits and interactive displays.

National Museum of the U.S. Air Force

The world's largest military aviation museum is located here. If you are interested in this topic, you should pay a visit to this extensive site with numerous historical and military exhibits. There is a lot to see here, from the aircraft of the first hours of flight history to the presidential jets and stealth jets.

Pro Football Hall of Fame

While football is sacred in many European countries, football is the national sport of the United States. Hardly any other sport enjoys such enthusiasm and reporting. Football fans in Canton have the opportunity to get very close to their idols, because here the stars are staged with numerous exhibits.

Cedar Point

Cedar Point is the self-declared capital of roller coasters, where visitors can ride 18 different models. The height, speed and construction alone show that some courage and, in particular, a strong stomach are required to get into these rides. There are also family-friendly programs for parents with young children.
